How the numbers are calculated

  • Position size

Money at risk is your balance times the risk percent. Divide that amount by the stop distance in pips and by the value of one pip to get the lot size.

  • Pip value

A standard lot is 100,000 units of the base currency. One pip is 0.0001, or 0.01 when the quote currency is Japanese yen. Gold uses 100 troy ounces per standard lot, and one pip is 0.01. The result is converted into your account currency.

  • Profit, loss, and margin

Profit uses the gap between entry and exit. Margin is the position’s quote-currency value divided by leverage, then converted into your account currency.

These figures are educational estimates. Currency pairs use a 100,000-unit contract, and gold uses 100 troy ounces. They leave out spread, commission, and swap, and they depend on the price you enter. Check your broker’s contract size before you trade.
